Notable differences

Architecture and process node divide:

  • Oryon on 3nm: Gen 5 and newer at tier 8 and up get custom Oryon cores on cutting-edge 3nm process
  • ARM on 4nm: everything else uses licensed ARM Cortex designs on previous-generation 4nm

Primary tier divider - Memory channels:

  • Quad-channel (64-bit): 7+ and higher all uses quad-channel (64-bit) memory busses
  • Dual-channel (32-bit): 7 and lower uses dual-channel (32-bit) memory busses

ISP bit depth jump:

  • 20-bit ISPs: 8 and up & Gen 5 and newer
  • 18-bit ISPs: everything in between
  • 12-bit ISPs: 7 tier

Modem tier separation:

  • 10+ Gbps modems: X85 (12.5 Gbps) on 8 Elite Gen 5, X80/X75 (10 Gbps) on 8 Elite, 8 Gen 5, 8 Gen 3
  • Sub-5 Gbps modems: X70/X63 (4-5 Gbps) on 8s series and 7 series - massive speed gap

Key tier-breaking anomalies:

  • 20-bit ISPs: Available on 8 Gen 5, not just Elite models
  • Hardware matrix acceleration: On 8 Elite Gen 5 and 8 Gen 5, but NOT on original 8 Elite
  • 320MP photo support: Present on 8s Gen 4 despite mid-tier positioning
  • mmWave 5G removal: 8s Gen 4 loses mmWave that 8s Gen 3 had (rare feature regression)
  • FastConnect 7900: Deployed to 8 Gen 5, no longer Elite-exclusive
