A list of all blind-accessible videogames

A list of all blind-accessible videogames

This is a list of every videogame accessible to the blind. For purposes of this article, blind means someone with no usable vision. For every game, it's level of accessibility will be described next to it.

For some games there is not enough information so feel free to leave your experiences in the comments. Also, if you know of any other blind-accessible games that aren't on this list, please write them down in the comments. You can also message me on Discord (my username is: molitvan).

This was originally started on June 18th, 2024 in the form of this Reddit thread and has since been moved here. A website for this list and more is planned in the future. Stay tuned!

Games

  • The Last of Us part I. (PC/PS5) - fully accessible w/audio description
  • The Last of Us part II. (PC/PS4/PS5) - fully accessible, but the PS5 and PC versions have more features like audio description and higher quality TTS with support for all game languages
  • God of War Ragnarök (PS4/PS5) - half-baked accessibility with many features broken or partially finished (like the screen reader not reading most of the game), but there is a guide, available here specifically meant to help blind players get around these issues. Also there is audio description, but with many grammatical errors.
  • Spiderman 2 (PC/PS5) - mostly accessible w/audio description (requires brief sighted assistance at certain points in the game, but otherwise fully accessible)
  • Minecraft: Java Edition (PC, with the Minecraft Access mod) - mostly accessible, requires decent spatial awareness
  • Factorio (PC, with the Factorio Access mod) - mostly accessible, currently stuck on an older game version with support for the newest version being worked on and expected probably in a few months. That older version (1.1) still has planty of content and new players won't notice any significant changes when upgrading to 2.0.
  • Lethal Company (PC, with the Lethal Access mod) - mostly accessible
  • Forza Motorsport (PC/Xbox) - fully accessible, high learning curve, includes audio description
  • As Dusk Falls (PC/PS5/Xbox) - fully accessible w/audio description (the game is also available for PS4, but that version is not accessible)
  • Hades (PC, with the Erumi's Blind Accessibility Options modpack) - playable, but a bit tricky at times, uses OCR
  • Hades II. (PC, with the Blind Accessibility and the Tolk Compatibility mods) - limited information, also there isn't any useful information in the mod's readme, but a post by the developer with more info can be found here
  • Stardew Valley (PC, with the Stardew Access mod) - mostly accessible with downsides being related to combat and efficiency when doing some tasks compared to sighted players. Most of that can be fixed with other mods though.
  • Plants vs Zombies (PC, with the pvz-a11y mod) - fully accessible
  • Diablo IV (all platforms) - mostly accessible, requires mental mapping in dungeons, nav assist only in overworld for now
  • Brock the Investigator (all platforms) - fully accessible w/audio description
  • Mortal Kombat 1 (all platforms) - fully accessible w/audio description
  • Slay the Spire (PC, with the Say the Spire mod) - fully accessible
  • Hearthstone (PC, with the Hearthstone Access mod) - fully accessible
  • World of Warcraft (PC, with the Blind Slash mod) - mostly accessible, sighted assistance required in dungeons and end-game content
  • World of Warcraft Classic (PC, with the SKU mod) - not in active development as seen by the notice in the description. As such, I don't recommend it to new players, but I'm putting it here just to make it clear it exists for now.
  • Crusader Kings III (PC, with a mod) - fully accessible with OCR. This means that everything can be played, but the mod relies on using live OCR instead of directly outputing text to a tts.
  • Skull Girls (PC) - fully accessible
  • Balatro (PC, with the Black Hole mod) - fully accessible
  • Any game made in Ren'Py e.g. Doki Doki Literature Club, Slay the Princess... (PC, sometimes with a mod) - fully accessible
  • Fortnite (PC, with the FA11y mod, aim assist available separately here) - playable, but a bit tricky to learn. Also requires a good computer because the mod uses machine learning for everything
  • Yu-Gi-Oh: Master Duels (PC, with the Master Duels Blind Mode mod) - work in progress, looking very promising
  • Pokémon Reborn (PC)
    • Without mods: mostly accessible, instead of navigation assistance there are audio cues for bumping into things to tell you what it is and also for figuring out where walls or empty space are
    • with the PK Reborn Access mod - improves the experience with a lot of features including proper nav assist and improving menu narration in some screens
  • Assassin's Creed Shadows (all platforms) - limited information, the game looks to be playable, but very frustrating. It may get removed from this list in the future.
  • Street Fighter 6 (all platforms) - fully accessible gameplay with features like accessibility audio cues, but with no screen reader. Works well with OCR
  • All GBC and GBA Pokemon games including some ROM hacks (emulated on PC, with the Pokemon Access mod) - fully accessible
  • F1 25 (all platforms) - accessibility audio cues in races enabling almost full accessibility of gameplay, however no screen reader or any other features
  • Blackbox (iOS) - fully accessible
  • Soulblaze (PC) - fully accessible
  • Sequence Storm (PC) - fully accessible
  • Red and Black (PC) - fully accessible
  • Terraria (PC, with the Terraria Access mod) - work in progress, under active development
  • Final Fantasy VI (PC, with the FF6 Screen Reader mod) - work in progress, under active development
  • Final Fantasy IX (PC, with this fork of the Memoria engine, download separately available here) - work in progress, under active development
  • Disco Elysium (PC, with the Disco Accessibility mod, download separately available here) - fully accessible, requires both controller and keyboard, navigation needs some getting used to
  • Rimworld (PC, with the Rimworld Access mod) - mostly accessible, limited information on what specifically isn't accessible, more info available here
  • 1428: Shadows Over Silesia (PC) - fully accessible w/audio description
  • Rhythm Doctor (PC) - fully accessible w/audio description, except the custom level editor
  • Bits and Bops (PC) - fully accessible w/audio description
  • Slots and Daggers (PC, with this mod) - fully accessible
  • DawnCaster (Android/iOS, PC coming soon) - fully accessible w/audio description
  • Pokemon Rejuvenation (PC, with the Crawli Support Pack modpack) - playable, but very early
  • Pokemon Showdown (PC) - fully accessible
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (PC) - more info available here
  • Escape from Norwood (PC/Android/iOS) - fully accessible
  • Kilta (PC) - fully accessible
  • Firebird (PC) - fully accessible
  • Luck be a Landlord (PC) - fully accessible

Accidentally accessible games

These are games that are playable, but without the developers or modders specifically including accessibility for us. Experience with these games may wary.

  • Most fighting games (e.g. older Mortal Kombat)
  • Rhythm Heaven (Nintendo 3DS) - accidentally playable, menu guide available here
  • 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (PS4/PS5/Switch) - playable, more information and guide available here
  • Ninja Gaiden 3: OCR required, has navigation assist which makes it playable
  • Resident Evil 6: OCR required, has navigation assist which makes it playable.
  • The Jackbox party pack series, from volume 7 upwards including the starter pack. These are social games that work by having one player run the game and show it to others, either IRL on a tv or through a stream on a platform like Discord. The game menus are not narrated, but each minigame has unique music in the selection menu, and once a game is selected you can press up arrow on PC to have the room code read outloud. The web interface for the players is where most of the accessibility is as all visual elements, such as leaderboard changes, are audio described by screen readers. Accessibility for the specific minigames varies, but in general anything which doesn’t involve drawing, i.e. any word, trivia or creative writing games are fully accessible. Older games in the series from volume 6 down also have a few playable games, but don’t have the room code reading or enhanced audio descriptions on the website.
  • Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero - playable, but requires a lot of OCR

You should add Black Box. It's probably the second most creatively accessible game ever, after The Last of Us, Part II.

Interesting. This was actually on the list at one point while this was still on Reddit, but I removed it because I literally couldn't find any info on it and I don't have an iPhone so I can't test for myself.

Just to clarify, this is considered a videogame right? Asking because Audiogames aren't a part of this list.

Edit: text games don't belong here either

Correct. It's a puzzle game that includes visuals, audio, and other interactivity... you don't typically solve the puzzles by touching the screen of the app though.

You can include Rhythm Heaven Megamix for the 3DS. There's a guide for the menus and stuff on Audiogames.net Forum in the articles room and the game is Rhythm based so it's playable.

Could you please post the link to the guides? The search feature on the audiogames.net forum seems to be broken.

Hi.
Thanks for putting together this great list.

I have two important changes:
Spiderman 2:
The main campaign is playable without any sighted assistance. We are some blind people who have done it.

As Dark Falls: The ps4 version is not accessible since it does not contains the screenreader and audio description.

Hades 2: Maybe the information should be updated since there is links to the mods.

The same goes for Plats vs. zombies.

Skull girls: Only accessible on pc.

Games which are playable by accident

13 sentinels ps4. There is an article about this in the articles room on the Audiogames forum.

Ninja gaiden 3: OCR is required. Have navigation assist which makes it playable.

Resident Evil 6: OCR is required. Have navigation assist which makes it playable.

I have no experience with Github other than writing comments, so I don't know if I can write all those information into the main post.

For Spiderman, I don't think the game is realistically 100% accessible, but it's very close. I did change the wording a bit however to hopefully make it more clear what I meant so please tell me if you think this is ok. I've played it myself and it's my second favorite accessible game right below Minecraft.
All mods, including the ones you mentioned, are listed in a separate section below the games themselves. Should I maybe merge that into the games list to make it more clear?

Hi.
Thanks for updating with the changes.
Spiderman 2: There are sections which are not accessible, but they are that much playable, that no sighted assistance is needed. It's just a shame if people are holding off by buying the game, because of the false information about sighted assistance is required. Then, you should move the game to the playable games section.

Regarding the mods, it says the following: Plants vs Zombies (PC, with a mod) - no information. But the information is actually under the mods section.

Skull Girls: Seems like you forgot to edit this information. This is only accessible on pc.

Keep up the great job.

Thanks for your feedback.
Regarding Spiderman, I and many others agree that there are a few (maybe 3 or 4) short sections of the game where sighted assistance is required. I can't say that the game is fully accessible with no sighted assistance required whatsoever because it simply isn't. I tried to make that clear in the description, but I'll try to work on the wording to hopefully make it acceptable for both you and me.
About PvZ, no information means that I have no information on how accessible it is and not that I don't have information about where to get the mod and stuff which is what is written in the below section. If you've played it, could you please describe its level of accessibility? Also, do you think I should merge the games list section and the mods and resources section? So put the links along with the games themselves.
For SG, I forgot to update it. I'll do it now.

Hi,
Just jumping in here since I have played PVZ. It can be 100% completed blind, there were a few bugs or unintended interactions I found that I posted in the issues page but other than those the game plays fine. Unfortunately I’m not sure if they’ll be fixed since the dev seems to be MIA but they’re not serious issues.
Also going to add a few more games to the list. Sequence Storm which is a rhythm game, some Gears of War games, Sea of Thieves. I haven’t played any of these so this is only from what I’ve read or heard from other blind players, and with Sea of Thieves it seems to be very sighted help dependent still so you may consider omitting that or putting a disclaimer. Link to an article detailing them is here:
https://caniplaythat.com/2021/10/21/5-games-for-blind-and-visually-impaired-players/
There is also a Doom accessibility mod I’ve been meaning to try out that works with the first couple of games, but I haven’t been able to find much information on that so I’ll get back to you on that later.
And final note, the pokemon GBA scripts also work with some romhacks, just modifications of the base games to add more modern content or alter the games entirely.
Merging the games and their respective links if applicable sounds good.
Thanks for putting this list together, I was really surprised to see what is available despite the limited options and it’s been great getting back into a hobby I thought I wouldn’t be able to enjoy again.

Thank you. About Gears of War and Sea of Thieves (you're probably referring to Gears 5), I won't be adding those because even though they do have some accessibility features for us, they're not really playable without massive constant sighted help (somebody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Also I see Sequence Storm is free to play so I'll definitely check it out myself before adding, probably later today. And about the Doom mod, I've heard of it and was meaning to put it on the list, but finding any official channel to get the actual mod has been a nightmare. The only thing I was able to find were a bunch of forum posts and no official GitHub or website or anything so please tell me when you get to trying it out.

Hello and thank you for your suggestions. Taking a quick look at the Steam game list you sent, a lot of games on there seem to be audiogames/games that are only meant to be played by the blind and this list is not a place for that. I'll definitely take a more detailed look at it when I have more time though because not all games on there are audiogames.

Rhythm Quest and Red and Black look interesting so thank you for making me aware of them. I'll definitely do some research on them and look into including them here.

Hi. I'm having trouble starting a game in Rhythm Quest. I just get stuck on what I assume is the difficulty selection screen. Any tips?

@inkydragon

I'm having trouble starting a game in Rhythm Quest.

I did run into a few instances where using mouse clicks or keyboard keys were unresponsive. Maybe restarting the game will fix the problem.

I'm not sure if the first install had NVDA support or TTS turned on by default.
I reinstalled the demo version and used NVDA. assuming this is the same as the first install.

The first screen of the game is some explanatory text stating that this is the demo version.
NVDA reads out the title of the text "Welcome to the Rhythm Quest Demo!".
When the game is loaded, NVDA will output "Press Enter to Continue"
If you only hear the title and not the key prompt, try clicking the mouse a few times, any position will do, wait a few seconds (it shouldn't be more than 30 seconds at the longest) and you should hear the button prompt. At this point click mouse or press Enter key to reach the main menu.

If you never hear the key prompt, we recommend restarting the game.

Any more questions you can join the official Discord, the invite link is on the website:

I have a suggestion: what if you separated the list in two parts: accessible without mods, and accessible with mods. I think this would help, especially for people who don't know how to use mods and are uncomfortable with that.

@pitermach

Very cool list.

A few more to add, there are probably many more I'm forgetting but these are the ones that jumped out at me:

  • 1428: Shadows Over Silesia fully accessible with audio descriptions
  • Rhythm Doctor fully accessible with audio description with the exception of the custom level editor. To get the accessibility as of writing you have to switch to the public beta branch, but I'm reading the game will be exiting early access and releasing officially on December 6th so It's very likely this won't be necessary then as the official release announcement specifically calls out adding audio description to remaining levels. Narration can be turned on by pressing F8.
  • Bits and Bops fully accessible with audio descriptions. This is another game which currently has a demo out but the full version is coming out later this month
  • Slots and Daggers can be made accessible with this mod
  • DawnCaster fully accessible with audio descriptions (which in this case means every monster you fight is described.) This game is currently available on iOS and Android, but is soon coming to PC via Steam and the developers have confirmed that version will also be accessible. Mobile games in general is a topic which could probably fill out the list all on its own.
  • The Jackbox party pack series, from volume 7 upwards including the starter pack. These are social games that work by having one player run the game and show it to others, either IRL on a tv or through a stream on a platform like Discord. I don't think that's necessary. All games that require mods are clearly labeled as accessible "with X mod" and I think separation would just complicate things more than it should. I could separate out mods and natively accessible games like I did with accidentally accessible games if others also think that would be helpful, but I personally don't think that's necessary.

Hey,

Thanks for putting together this super awesome resource!

I'd like to suggest adding Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 to the list.
The sim comes with menu narration built in as an accessibility feature, but the default planes are not themselves accessible.
However, it is possible to fully operate and fly all of the Boeing aircraft models made by PMDG, such as the Boeing 737-800 or the B777-200ER using Talking Flight Monitor. This is an external program which was specifically developed to make all aircraft panels, switches and systems fully screenreader accessible.
And very recently, a new accessibility addon was released, MSFS Blind Assist, which provides access to Airbus models developed by FlyByWire Simulations and Fenix Simulations.
All of these aircraft have quite a steep learning curve, as flying them requires a deep understanding of the various aircraft systems and procedures. Fortunately, however, there are lots of online tutorials and YouTube videos explaining how all of this works, and since the accessible panels have exactly the same types of controls that sighted sim pilots have in the sim, these tutorials can be followed quite well by us blind simmers as well.
Finally, there's a community Wiki at https://bvipilots.net with a ton of accessibility-specific info, and a link to join our very active WhatsApp community.

@blindbat84

Here are four more games for the list.

Escape from Norwood
Kilda
Firebird
Luck be a Landlord

All are accessble out of the box without any mods.

Also, a question. I bought Red and Black but can't seem to figure out how to activate the accessibility. Nowhere on the steam page does it say how, just that it can. Using NVDA but can't seem to figure this out. Can't find anywhere that says either.
Each game listed will either start accessibility automatically BTW, or the steam/game page will tell you how. I can get instructions for each if requested to add next to them in the notes to make it easy.
