Fix Civ VI Crashing on macOS Apple Silicon

Updates

  • 2025-01-27: Quite unexpectedly, it seems that just setting Memory to minimum will work
(unexpected because the error I get is about threads - CPUs)

Quick Fix

Screenshot 2025-01-27 at 12 22 46 PM

The "Performance Impact" has dozens of options. One or more of them is buggy on macOS and causes Civ VI to crash every few minutes.

I don't know which specific option(s) cause it to crash, but by turning them all off it's possible to play for hours without crashing.

Comment with Suggestions

If you can interpret the error logs, or test and figure out which option(s) cause the crash, please comment and let the rest of us know.

The suggestion works on M4, macOS Sequoia 15.5, thank you.

Edit: works as long as I keep the game in foreground. If it stays a couple of minutes in background, it will crash anyway.

I have a weekly Civ night with a friend and depending on the update any given week it's a complete grab bag. I wish I could pin it to the version from about two weeks ago and never have it update again.

On M1 MacOS Sequoia 15.6, lowering both "Performance Impact" and "Memory Impact" settings to "Minimum" extended the game to at least 1 hour of gameplay time. With autosaving, this works well enough.
