This is my own dictionary of single-word adjectives and nouns, because all the existing dictionaries I found stink. You‘d use something like this to arbitrarily name a project, e.g. fabulous-spotted-wombat.

The goals of this list:

  1. to be fun: names should be amusing, and at times, funny (there are even some pop culture references like cromulent and wumbo). Words don’t have to be all-positive meanings but they can’t be a total mood-killer (a project named devious-little-monkey is funny, but demonic-bloody-carcas is a bit much).
  2. to be inclusive: words that could be misconstrued in a gender-based, racial, religious or physical/mental abled-ness context should be avoided. If a term causes someone grief, even only in a certain context, it shouldn’t appear on this list. As an example, black and white don’t appear on this list—even though both are harmless colors, they quickly take on new, historically-problematic meanings when paired with other words.
  3. to be SFW: even if something is inclusive doesn’t mean it‘s work-safe. You shouldn’t blush by seeing a name. Perhaps one could make a Cards Against Humanity version of this list, but this list is not it.

Adjectives and nouns

The primary use of this is to generate [adjective]-[adjective]-[noun] names (or some prefer [adjective]-[noun]-[noun]).

  • adjectives: anything goes except for things violating the above rules. Near-identical words are removed just for interest (e.g. cool appears in the list, but cooler and coolest are omitted as they have the same root)
  • nouns: currently featuring animals, plants, and mythological/fantasy things. More to be added soon.
