How to default to Google Search without AI in Google Chrome

How to set Google Search without AI by default in Google Chrome

These AI overviews are pretty annoying and can't be turned off by default. However, Google suggests using the "Web" tab in the results to see only web results instead of AI generated stuff... Well, that's what I use a search engine for, so yes please.

Setting it as your default search engine is a little bit convoluted, but well worth the effort.

First open the Search Engine settings from chrome://settings/searchEngines.

In the Site Search section, click the Add button. In the dialog that opens, enter:

  • Name: Google Search without AI
  • Shortcut: @google
  • URL: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14

Then click Add to save it.

The created entry now appears in the Site Search list. Click on the three-dots menu for the created item and select Make default.

Now all Google searches will be in the Web category. If you want to get access to the AI overview, or to get cards or definitions, just click on the All tab at the top of the page.

Enjoy!
