Update postman collection from source (openapi3 to postman)
/*
postman makes finding the collection id and uid rather.... "interesting".
step 1: import your collections from files (collection not api) -
on the left menu in postman go to "collections", import, select your file
if you import the file under "api" you will end up with 2 that look the same for step 2.
step 2: setup a GET request in postman to https://api.getpostman.com/collections
add a "header" and call it "X-Api-Key" and the value is the api key setup in secret.js. click send

Notes on Modern UI Development: Iterating over the other 80%

Introduction

I have been working on a modern typing training application for the last couple of days. One of the main motivations was to build an app with a modern UI and minimal distractions, enabling to fully focus on the training aspect. You can read more about the original idea and thought process here.

One of the main features is being able to train your typing speed when working with code, which means the typing experience should come close to how you would type when working with an IDE. A feature that you would normally get inside such an environment is the auto closing of parentheses, brackets and braces. Which means you would for example type ( and the IDE would automatically add the closing ) for you.

The first iteration of Typing Cyclist was just a raw implementation which treated text and code examples the same. You would have to type

My Stripe Tax Story

I've been debating for weeks whether or not I was going to write any of this down. I'm a dad with two kids and a house to take care of and a business to run. Adding story-telling like this to my plate is exhausting.

Until yesterday, I had decided to forget about the whole thing, until I received the email that broke the camels back, as it were.

The best way I can describe why I'm writing this email is for the same reason why you might spend two hours dealing with an uncooperative mobile phone carrier to get them to remove that $5 charge on your bill that shouldn't be there. Some combination of the feeling of frustration and injustice that really pushes my proverbial buttons.

In this particular case, the "$5 charge on my phone bill" turned out to be literally hundreds of recurring subscription invoices that Stripe disabled collection for because, apparently, those subscriptions required "location inputs".

Generally speaking, I don't blog much anymore, and the last thing I wa

Auto-generates Serializers & ModelViewSets in a Django API using just models

Why?

I got sick of writing the same Serializer & ModelViewSet classes over and over so I found and wrote some code to do it for me, and somehow it works! Please note that there are a lot of caveats to running an API like this and while this may work, I know there's A LOT of room for improvement, feel free to fork and help!

USAGE

Import the router module to your main sites urls.py file as the injection point like so... Make sure to remove any other imports from other viewsets that you don't need that may conflict!

Notes on using Docker on ARM Macs (November 2021)

Docker for Mac

On M1 machines, Docker for Mac is running a lightweight linux ARM VM, then running containers within that, so containers are essentially running natively. Don't be fooled by the fact the UI or binary CLI tools (e.g. docker) might require Rosetta.

Within that VM is an emulation layer called QEmu. This can be used by docker to run Intel containers. This does not use Rosetta at all, and has a roughly 5-6X performance penalty. (If you just upgraded your CPU this may result in a similar performance to your old machine!)

Pulling and running with Docker

Many images in public registries are multi-architecture. For instance at the time of writing on Docker Hub the php:8.0-cli image has the following digests:

Selective Applicative Functors in WebCheck

WebCheck uses a version of PureScript for specifications in testing web applications, which I'll refer to as "the language" in this document.

A specification includes a top-level definition called proposition, which must be a pure expression of type Boolean. The interpreter of the language does not allow effects (the Effect type in PureScript, formerly known as Eff). But there are a few built-in constructs that are at least backed by non-pure computations:
