Using SQLite to store OpenAI vector embeddings from Ruby
# Example of using SQLite VSS with OpenAI's text embedding API
# from Ruby.
# Note: Install/bundle the sqlite3, sqlite_vss, and ruby-openai gems first
# OPENAI_API_KEY must also be set in the environment
# Other embeddings can be used, but this is the easiest for a quick demo

FFmpeg command to convert webm to mp4 video files

WebM to MP4 using FFmpeg

This FFmpeg command converts a .webm video file to a standard .mp4 file using the libx264 codec for video, aac codec for audio, and a CRF value of 22. The preset is set to 'slow' for higher quality encoding, and the audio bitrate is set to 128 kbps.

If the input and output filenames don't contain spaces, quotation marks or other special characters:

ffmpeg -i input.webm -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 22 -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4

Using Jemalloc 5 with Ruby.md

For years, people have been using jemalloc with ruby. There were various benchmarks and discussions. Legend had it that Jemalloc 5 didn't work as well as Jemalloc 3.

Then, one day, hope appeared on the horizon. @wjordan offered a config for Jemalloc 5.

Moving gulpfile from CommonJS (CJS) to ECMAScript Modules (ESM)

Moving gulpfile from CommonJS (CJS) to ECMAScript Modules (ESM)

Context

del v7.0.0 moved to pure ESM (no dual support), which forced me to move my gulpfile to ESM to be able to continue to use del.

The author sindresorhus maintains a lot of npm packages and does not want to provides an upgrade guide for each package so he provided a generic guide. But this guide is a bit vague because it's generic and not helping for gulp, hence this guide.

Ruby 3.1 on Rails

Ruby 3.1 on Rails

Actions required to use Ruby 3.1.0 with Rails

Rails 7.0.Z

  • Rails 7.0.1 is compatible with Ruby 3.1.0.
  • Rails 7.0.1 addes net-smtp, net-imap and net-pop gems as Action Mailbox and Action Mailer dependency, you do not need to add them explicitly in your application Gemfile anymore.
  • thor 1.2.1 has been released. You will not see DidYouMean::SPELL_CHECKERS.merge deprecate warnings anymore.

Rails 6.1.Z

  • Use Rails 6.1.5 to support database.yml with aliases and secrets.yml with aliases.

Setting session variables in an RSpec Rails request spec

Setting session variables in an RSpec Rails request spec

You are writing a spec with type: :request, i.e. an integration spec instead of a controller spec. Integration specs are wrappers around Rails' ActionDispatch::IntegrationTest class. I usually write controller tests using this instead of type: :controller, mainly because it exercises more of the request and response handling stack. So instead of writing something like get :index to start the request, you would write get books_path or similar.

One of the issues with using type: :request is that you lose the ability to
