What's the use of the staging area in git? on Stackoverflow (10 min)
The idea of the staging area is frequently one of the trickiest concepts to wrap your head around when you're first learning git. Read the question and answers (or do your own Googling on the git staging area). Then, create your own metaphor comparing the staging area to something in real life.
- Type your metaphor below: In my opinion, the staging area is like a the "return to the bookshelf" cart in a library. Once we are done making modifications to a file, we add it to the staging area (just like when a reader is done reading a book, they put it in the return cart). Then, we commit the file to officially mark that it has been changed in some way, and then it goes back to its unmodified stage to wait for future changes (just like when the librarian returns the used book to its place on the bookshelf, where another reader will find it and read it).
