1. 1.03 – Explain briefly in your own words what studying the Humanities means.
- Learn to be a human more subjective in culture, human beliefs, ideas, feelings and opinions in different time/period
2. 1.06 - Explain three technologies that are directly connected to the Humanities that had a major impact on our world.
- 1. Printing: distribute knowledge, idea
- 2. Electic: Though electric known long before since Egypt, Once Edison invent electric bulb, our world change and now all devices depend on electric
- 3. Internet: it make all device and people in the world connect and communicate like our world has no border any more.
3. 1.07 - Define in your own words what a "theme" is . Explain how themes, help us understand a time period
- Theme is an idea repeated and expressed in multiple time in each culture. So by categorize any incident in a theme, we can understand the reason and or effect of similar incident because it occure in that theme.
4. 1.07 - List the themes for the time periods covered in this course.
- Here the theme for each period
- Classical Period: balance, truth/reason, democracy/republic, plytheism, humanism
- The Renaissance Period: rebirth of classicism, humanisim, rationalism, scientific expansion, university system, individualism, self-fashioning
- The Neoclassical Period: skepticism, rationalism, empirism, order, deism, classicism, nature
- The Romantic Period: nationalism, individualism, passion, heroism, revolution, exoticism
- The Realist Period: Darwinism, industrialization, individualism, age of doubt-
5. 1.08 – Explain what a universal theme is and provide two examples.
- Universal theme is the theme that found in every period and culture of humanities such as:
- 1. Love: Eros, Agape
- 2. Hero: Archetype
- eros: erotic love
- agape: platonic love or selfless love of one person for another on a spiritual level, or love of pure beauty: aesthetic or intelletual
- archetype: about to be found in every culture such as: the hero
- monomyth: the hero'journey archetype
- myth: traditional story in history
- aesthetic experience: specific passion on beauty
7. 1.11 – Explain what “discipline” means in regards to the Humanities. Give 3 examples of disciplines covered in the course.
- "discipline" an actual action creation of each period in several forms such as art, literature, music, Philosophy, Religion which we can group or categorize as Humantities Disciplines. (field of study)
8. 1.13 – Explain each of the five functions of art and come up with your own example of each, something personal and easy to remember.
- Art provides aesthetic pleasure.(aesthetic: related to beauty) such as my favore music or pictures
- Art offers political and social commentary: Song written for political protest or even country national anthem..
- Art can assist in physical and emotional healing: such as art therapy for long term physical healing
- Art can create historical artifacts from a specific time or place: The Aztec Sun Stone from Mexico City Zocalo is a religious and cosmological artifact
- Art can be used to enable commerce in advertising products and services like all bill board, music advertising in current world.
9. 1.14 – Explain how the Humanities help us understand and be open to those who are different from us.
- Humanities is about culture, believe, idea, feelings and opinion which differ in each person or communities. It could expressed in several kind of formats like themes in different period of time. Which we can presume the reason of some evidences that occured in any period by the themes.
10. 1.15 – In the West, what is considered the cradle of Humanism?
- Ancient Greece and Rome is considered the cradle of Humanism in the West
11. 1.15 -- How is Humanism in Eastern cultures similar to and different from Humanism in Western cultures?
- Both Eastern and Western humanistic traditions emphasized virtue, or the pursuit of excellence through self-cultivation.
- The difference:
- Western humanistic tradition generally focused on pursuing knowledge and truth through rationality,
- Eastern traditions such as Buddhism emphasized discipline and self-development through specialized physical and meditative practices in order to assist individuals in achieving spiritual enlightenment.
12. 1.16 (and 1.03) – Define consilience and provide an example of how studying the Humanities might be valuable to someone in your own field.
- The linking together of principles across different academic subjects, such as the science and Humanities or themes of Roman and Renaisance

Thanks, Prateep! For #3 you might be confusing themes with time periods. Themes are ideas that show up in what people create because they are important to the people in some way. Otherwise, everything is looking good! :-) I look forward to module 2!
