Update if anyone needs this in 2025 for smooth monitor mode:
First disable networking and wifi from task bar (right click on network icon)
sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
sudo ifconfig wlan1 down
sudo iwconfig wlan1 mode monitor
sudo rfkill unblock 3
sudo ifconfig wlan1 up
Then monitor mode is enabled with no conflict. airmon-ng check kill makes the device unusable for some reason and couldn't find any other way around it. To enable managed mode again:
sudo ifconfig wlan1 down
sudo iwconfig wlan1 mode managed
sudo rfkill unblock 1
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
sudo ifconfig wlan1 up
