| Act I, Scene VII | |
| ( | |
| Gorgo, alone, standing in a dark place. | |
| ) | |
| [Gorgo] | |
| O gods, who stand above... | |
| Beneath whose gaze the Fates are sealed... | |
| Reveal to me the path I must take. | |
| For Sparta stands, | |
| Yet I tremble before the storm. | |
| [Pythia (out of view)] | |
| O daughter of Athena, | |
| victim of Aphrodite's jealousy, | |
| as wild as Cybele, | |
| don't you dare to lie to me. | |
| [Gorgo] | |
| I have no need of lies, | |
| brat and bitch. | |
| I will carve you to the floor, | |
| and take your heart, | |
| if you have nothing to say. | |
| [Pythia (out of view)] | |
| Lie to yourself, | |
| if you must, | |
| but not to the gods, | |
| that know you | |
| more than the mirror. | |
| [Gorgo] | |
| What lie do I speak? | |
| [Pythia (out of view)] | |
| You do not quake, | |
| do not tremble, | |
| no wind shakes your leaf. | |
| You come to beg, | |
| but already know, | |
| of what the fates, | |
| have in store. | |
| [Gorgo] | |
| I do not come in fear, | |
| but I yet tremble. | |
| I do not hate, | |
| and yet I shake. | |
| Speak to me, | |
| plead for me. | |
| (Pythia joins Gorgo on the stage.) | |
| [Pythia] | |
| What message should I take? | |
| The ground already weeps | |
| with the footfalls of | |
| a million souls | |
| in chains departing. | |
| [Gorgo] | |
| To the winds, | |
| spread my voice. | |
| Take the truth, | |
| of the lion, | |
| who refused to bow. | |
| [Pythia] | |
| The world will know, | |
| free men stand. | |
| That the few will fight the many. | |
| No wind need carry this. | |
| [Gorgo] | |
| It cannot be enough! | |
| Take it to corners of this world! | |
| My lion stood against | |
| a god! | |
| That Sparta never shall fall! | |
| [Pythia] | |
| Would your spirit be a price, | |
| you will pay, | |
| the messenger? | |
| [Gorgo] | |
| My spirit I cannot offer, | |
| it belongs to another. | |
| [Pythia] | |
| I would beg to Athena, | |
| but she is not here. | |
| The goddess roams, | |
| across a hill, | |
| down a path, | |
| to a burning mountain. | |
| Where three hundred will lie. | |
| [Gorgo] | |
| So shall it be. | |
| (Gorgo spins and leaves.) |
