Sidenote: you will still need one, but by the end of the guide you should only need to deal with this process once per year, assuming nothing changes.
Note
This guide only covers VPN setup, creating DMM account & installing Game Player is considered out of scope (this is long enough as is).
Use Nyatsu's DMM guide for guidance on getting set up, or check #jp-questions pins in maincord.
Warning
This guide was rewritten in August 2025 to no longer use TunnlTo. If you need the old version, it can still be accessed here. Also there's no video guide yet for this current one. I want to make one eventually, but if someone else has done so already feel free to ping me with it.
So, if you're like me you used ProtonVPN as a way to get around the most recent DMM block beginning in August of 2023.
Of course, you can't always have your cake & eat it too. So, what Proton did, some months later: no more server choices even with their already limited country selection for free users, and no more split tunneling either.
That's what most people think at least. Me, personally, I found a solution.
Here's what we are doing:
- Proton, of course, still offers Japanese servers to free users.
- Proton, of course, still offers the choice of downloading VPN configs to free users. (so they can use their alternative VPN clients on their toasters or what have you)
- So, we are going to download a VPN config file for a Japanese server from Proton... and use an alternative VPN client.
- The end result: we will always connect to that server (no nearest region BS).
First off, you need a Proton account. Go get that if you didn't already. If you have one already, go sign in to your dashboard (use ctrl+click to open that in a new tab).
When you are signed in, if you clicked that link above, you should be sent to a "Downloads" page. New accounts are also sent to that page by default and encouraged to download Proton's client. DON'T do that, we don't need it.
Ctrl+F (or scroll down until you find): WireGuard configuration - you should land at something like the screenshot below. DON'T take its suggestion regarding the best server (that nullifies the point of why we are here), go down just a little further so you're able to select a server.
Name, platform & VPN options don't really hurt, just leave them as is unless you care about them.
Scrolling down a little further will let you pick a server as intended, Japan should be the first country listed there. It shouldn't matter which server you pick, just click "Create" on one and give it a second.
After that, you will be shown your config file. Click "Download" to save a wg-JP-FREE-xxxxxx.conf file, after that you can close the tab.
I personally recommend and will be using WireSock Secure Connect in this guide.
Note
"TunnlTo was here, right? What happened?"
The version of TunnlTo previously used in this guide was unmaintained with some pretty annoying bugs. In comparison, Secure Connect required much less fiddling to get working (and stayed working).
You can try a newer version instead of Secure Connect - but your mileage may vary, I haven't used TunnlTo's newer version.
Download the installer from their website by clicking the Download button, then the green "Download for Windows 64-bit."
Going through the installer itself is only three clicks from start to finish (agree to terms, click install, launch).
Tsunagaru omoide... Itsumo kimi to ima wo... Anyway. Let's setup our VPN and our split tunnel. Starting at the home screen:
From here, click "Import profile..." then the panel on the right. Select the WG-FREE-... file you downloaded from Proton earlier. This will fill in most of the important info automatically.
Next, scroll all the way down. What we're looking for is "Tunneled applications" - and this is where things get fun for a second. In the provided textbox, type the following in (clicking the plus button after each one):
DMMGamePlayerDMMGamePlayerFastLauncher(optional, if you use it)- If attempting to log into DMM does not work the first time, add your browser to the list (logging in on recent versions of Game Player is through the browser)
- Depends on your browser of choice, but for Chrome use
chrome, for Firefox usefirefox, and for Edge usemsedge. - Under the "Tunneled applications" header, there is a Windows icon which you can click to add a currently open application. This is useful if you don't know the exe name.
- Depends on your browser of choice, but for Chrome use
This field is case sensitive and all entries must be separated by commas.
Note
PrincessConnectRedive (the game itself) is not listed here because most people, even outside Japan, can still connect to the servers without VPN services. If Cygames does start locking things down again, it is a one-line fix, but I'd encourage keeping it out if you don't need it.
Any other "region locked" applications you want to use under this connection can also be entered in the same place. Nothing else will be put through the VPN unless you explicitly tell it to (or get rid of the allow list).
Once you're all done, you can click "Save."
That's the OST title of the victory fanfare that plays whenever you beat a stage in PriConne, you learn something new everyday.
Once you're done with the previous steps, all that's left to do is select the profile and hit the switch!
Launch your DMM client to test, you should be able to log in and launch a game successfully.
Secure Connect can be set to run on startup automatically, making it almost a seamless process to access DMM.
Click the cog on the bottom right of the home screen, then in "General" tab turn on the following settings:
- "Enable application autostart"
- "Start minimized"
- "Connect on startup"
- "Minimize app to tray on close"
You may also wish to enable the notification settings below that, but it's not strictly necessary.
I would suggest the following things:
- Are you absolutely sure you imported your Proton config file from earlier?
- If you entered
.exeat the end of every line in your allowlist by instinct, you don't need that, get rid of it. - Check your allowlist - it is case-sensitive and all entries should be separate.
- Make sure you are not using any other VPN applications that may possibly take over your connection, they may be fighting(?)
- Just make sure Secure Connect is actually open. I have had a few times where Windows doesn't launch it despite the startup setting.
If any of these aren't your issue, then I'm not sure what else could happen unfortunately (because networking is hard). Also consider trying all usual network troubleshooting steps (restart PC, reinstall the network drivers, etc...) to isolate any potential causes.
The most likely cause is your VPN key has expired, and it should start working again when you get a new one and reconfigure Secure Connect with it.
So, congratulations! You can now play the game without another corporation with a profit motive getting in the way. Freedom tastes sweet.

Please note I usually don't accept friend requests (especially with no mutual servers/friends). My DMs are open in most places, there's a link to the priconne server in the document's intro if you need it.

So I followed the steps for proton now what?
