Video Editing Lappy Brernn Dremp

OK, so after mulling it over for a bit I've had some thoughts/also might rephrase some things

These points hold true no matter whether you keep your existing and upgrade, or get a new one:

  • Memory: 8GB is enough for what you're doing, 16GB would probably be overkill. i.e. upgrading the amount of ram you have probably won't make scrubbing faster

  • Hard drive: Just a warning - speed is good, but storage space is a bitch, and I'd be super wary of running out of space (especially if you're editing video footage and wanting to archive some). No matter the HDD type, 1TB would be ideal IMO, but you could get away with 512GB (good) or 256 (stretching it).

    • Defs go with an SSD (flash drive - tiny - no moving components) vs a regular 2.5" laptop hard drive (spins - extra slow)

Re: whether to upgrade or not:

  • Testing: You can choose the best path via a test (hopefully): You could whack open Task Manager with control + shift + escape, and then do some scrubbing in your editor as your usually would. Check the task manager on the side
    • Is the CPU at 100%?
      • yes: This means that the CPU is working as hard as it can, and that a CPU (i.e. other laptop) upgrade is the only real option
      • no: Upgrading other components like memory and hard drive will make real difference, as it will be faster to feed more information to the CPU to work on
    • Is the RAM at 100%?
      • no: upgrading the ram/memory won't make a difference
      • yes: upgrading the ram will make a difference
