Post-Grad Job Search Action Plan
## #1: Job Search Plan: Create a schedule & goals
1. My 40-hour "work week":
* Code: 3-4 hours a day, every morning
* Outreach: 2-3 cold outreach emails/messages per week
* Research: 1 hour per day, after lunch
* Network: 1-2 events per week (meetups/conferences/job fairs)
2. Backwards planning: What is your cut-off for ending the job search? When do you want to receive and sign an offer by?
Ideally, I would like to receive an offer by the end of October. I have to have a job by the end of the year.
3. Based on what you outlined above, create monthly, weekly, and daily goals in order to reach your big goal.
Weekly: See above
Monthly: Work through some harder Turing projects, solidify skills on what felt difficult.
Try to make more connections in the development community, try to find a mentor.
4. Block out time on your calendar *now* to adhere to these goals. At the end of each week, assess what worked with the schedule and what didn't so that you can make adjustments as needed and manage your time even more effectively for the following week.
Done.
5. What "barriers" tend to hold you back in the job search? What steps will you take to overcome those "barriers"?
Cold Outreach seems very intimidating. I need to remember that the person I reach out to is not as worried about it as I am, and should treat it as a way to develop relationships in the industry.
## #2: Longterm Career Plan: What are your career goals?
Where do you want to go in your career?
1. Imagine that it's 5 years from now - what have you accomplished during that time? How is your life different? What steps did you take to achieve your goals?
I want to be able to implement unique solutions. I would like people to recommend me for good work.
2. Create a vision statement for these longterm goals.
Keep working hard and learning new skills. Do what you're drawn to, and what you enjoy doing, and success will come naturally.
3. Reference what you outlined in your Flower Exercise -- what preferred level of responsibility do you want to move to? Do you want to start your own company? What kind of work do you see yourself doing longterm? In your first year on the job, what skills do you want to develop to work towards your longterm goals?
I might consider starting my own business in the future, but for now I want to concentrate on learning more and gaining experience. I would like to work for a small or a mid-size company.
