Brandon's Strengths & Storytelling Reflection Guidelines

Strengths & Storytelling Reflection Guidelines

Build on your professional story by thinking about how you're progressing at Turing. Answer the questions below in your own gist to use your StrengthsFinder themes to add to your story:

  • Write 1-2 paragraphs about your StrengthsFinder themes: How have you seen yourself using these strengths at Turing? Has your understanding of these strengths changed since you first reflected on them? If so, how?

My top StrengthsFinder theme was responsibility, and I see this playing out in good and bad ways. It's good for staying on track and being motivated to get things done, but it adds a considerable amount of stress to my life. I am not used to accepting that there's sometimes just not enough time to get everything you want done or perfect. Overall I think this has caused more bad than good, because often I get little sleep at night due to the heavy weight of the responsibility I feel to make everything work.

The other theme I can see is being deliberative. I like t

Guiding Questions to Define The Relationship:

  • What are your learning goals for this project? What drives us in this project?

Brandon: I hope to further solidify my understanding of jQuery and JS to do common functions. Also to refine CSS to avoid duplicate code.

  • What is your collaboration style? How do you feel about pair programming vs. divide-and-conquer approaches?

Brandon: I find working together in-person to be beneficial because you can bounce ideas of each other, and you also get the benefit of knowing how the entire project works and the practice of creating it. However, sometimes divide and conquer is necessary.

CSS Layout Challenges

CSS Layout Challenges

Challenge 1

I switched the div floats on 1 and 2 to get them in the same position as the comp. Then I added a third div with the class of div3, and moved its position into the html flow where it should go. I set the position to relative with a float right. This way the position of other divs are unaffected and div3 only needs to be given some breathing room with a margin-left of 10px. I also set the margin-top for all divs to be -8px to eliminate the white space at the top, and added -8 to the right of div3 and left of div1.

4. Acknowledge that most major decisions don’t matter that much

This particular behavior resonated with me because of some advice I got at a former job. I drove a truck picking up and delivering books for the library district. As I was training, I asked what happened if I forgot a box and the trainer told me, "don't worry about it, it will still be there tomorrow." He took what seemed like a major issue to me and made it simple. In relation to the article, I like taking the focus off of the superficial. This allows you to focus on the elements that are truly important to accomplishing your goals.

18. Always code review your own work first

Coming from an English and creative writing backround, I actually enjoy the process of editing. Even when writing an email I have a tendency to read it several times to make sure everything is correct or see if there is a better way to say it. It seems that a similar approach can be applied to coding. There are lots of opportunities to clean up and solidif

Chapters 1 & 2: HTML & CSS

On a website, what is the purpose of HTML code?

The purpose of HTML code on a website is to describe the structure of pages.

What is the difference between an element and a tag?

The terms element and tag are often used interchangeably. An element tells the browser something about the information that sits between its opening and closing tags. Elements are generally considered to have two tags (opening and closing).

Why do we use attributes in HTML elements?

Attributes are used in HTML elements to provide additional information about the contents of the element. For example, the language. They are made up of two parts -- a name and a value -- and are separated by an equals sign.
